Need advice from headphone/headphone amp pros. My situation is I have noisy neighbors who will not cooperate. I would like to listen to my Netflix movies through my PS3, but need to configure a way to modulate the volume and improve the sound I hear through my Audio Technica ATHANC7 noise-canceling cans with the PS3 streaming Netflix content. I am not using a receiver (or) stereo amp in this setup. I really like what I read with the iBasso D10 Cobra headphone amp. In summation here's the plan: PS3 (connected w/ HDMI cable to monitor for video) > iBasso D10 Cobra (to amplify and attenuate the volume) > Audio Technica ATHANC7 headphones to listen to Netflix audio. Will it work? Recommendations needed & welcome. |

If I'm not wrong, you can just use the optical out of your ps3 into your D10 using optical cable. Do remember to set your audio output to optical. |

I'm going to wait and get some more verification that what I'm trying to do will work before I spend on the iBasso D10 for my PS3. I had a Benchmark Dac1 Pre that I had to sell, and I know the Benchmark was fine for a headphone amp with the PS3 through the optical connection - but that was when I had an integrated amp in the mix, this time I'm going with just the monitor, PS3, iBasso D10 (maybe), and a headset. |

If the Benchmark DAC1 works, I'm very sure that the D10 works fine too

I was wondering how effective active noise cancelling cans are with regards to noisy neighbours? I always thought they were meant for background noises like the drone/hum from airplanes/trains. If noisy neighbours is the main issue, maybe a pair of good circumaural isolating cans, or even IEMs might do a better job? IMHO, if your aim is to improve the sound quality from the PS3(since you are considering a DAC/AMP),you might wanan consider/try other cans first before dumping cash on other components because you might not be able to appreciate(or fully appreciate) the DAC/AMP combo with the ATHANC7. Don't get me wrong, your current cans are not "bad", I just think that the improvements won't scale too dramatically with a dedicated DAC/AMP. How were your previous experiences with the benchmark+integrated amp? My 2 cents. |

personally, i find that noise cancellation sort of dampens the sound quality ![]() the benchmark DAC1's integrated amp aint bad at all. |

"If the Benchmark DAC1 works, I'm very sure that the D10 works fine too" As I mentioned already, my Dac1 is gone for needing money for bills. It worked fine because it was configured to my integrated amp (also now gone) and my PS3. I asked about compatibility of D10 with just a monitor and PS3. "I was wondering how effective active noise canceling cans are with regards to noisy neighbors?" In my case they certainly help ameliorate much of the outside noise. "..if your aim is to improve the sound quality from the PS3(since you are considering a DAC/AMP),you might want to consider/try other cans first before dumping cash on other components" The D10 is only $240. Not exactly high end. Not exactly a Dac1 Pre. I have owned some of the best Senn's and had Grado cans when back near their introduction to the market (when I suspect many here were still playing with blocks and drinking from sippy cups). I don't mean to be a wise a_s because I am asking advice, and I do know that many people younger are more knowledgeable than I about the compatibility of digital devices. (remember, I'm an old analog dude from way back). "personally, i find that noise cancellation sort of dampens the sound quality.." Agree. If it was top-tier audiophile headphone sound I was after I would have a dCs dac and some reference cans tapping highest quality sources. My goal is just to get my PS3 and a headphone amp and headphones to play well enough together to let me get just enough volume and reasonable audio quality to listen to the plain old Netflix audio stream which is nothing fancier that regular old two-channel sound - a far cry from DSD multi-channel, or the other hi-rez audio feeds that classical listeners with $100K sound systems are enjoying. Please don't take my diatribe as a condemnation of the responses - I appreciate your help. Really I do. |
