Recommendations for Sturdy IEM's?; Looking for Hardy IEM/Earphones

Hey guys,

Apologies if this seems like another "Hey, i'm too lazy to fully check the forums so I'll post a new thread to ask my question" thread, but after busting what is like a 3rd pair of earphones in the last 7-9 months, I'd thought I had better ask around the community here for some suggestions on IEM's which are somewhat hardy or stands up to the rigor to wear & tear of daily use somewhat better...

Currently strugglin with my iGrado's with only one side working (2nd time this has happened.. no sound outta the left side like the first pair that got replaced).

Guess my criteria's is:
Budget:S$50 - 75 with S$100 being the absolute ceiling price.

Sources:To be used with my laptop & probably iPhone/iPod in near future as my iPod classic & Mylar's followed my (now ex) GF overseas last month.

Past earphones: iBuds, Sennheiser 260's, JVC Marshmallows, Crossroads Mylar3

As you might notice, I've been purchasing lower end headphones as I tend to a rough & tumble type.. and as much as I try to look after the phones.. usually they'll end up with fraying of the wires to one of the sides to the earpiece, or possible internal breakage of the wire/cable from the plug (esp the iPod type mini plugs). Kinda prefer the classic plugs which are angled, but just like an overall longer lasting item.

I'm flexible in terms of SQ, & might be willing to consider Headphones within the budget as well. Please give me some thoughts/ suggestions on where/what would be good ones to be looking at.. e.g. are so called "sports range" IEM's/Earphones more 'robust'?

Please advise on potential earphones/IEM's or headphones with indication where is best to check em out (i.e. Jaben, Stereo, etc) and rough pricing (if posting prices is allowed)

Read about SoundMAGIC PL30 and haven't heard much about them before.. but thought I'll check base with y'all first before testing some of em out

Cheers!

I think you might want to check out the Soundmagic PL50. Ahdui has a pair and he says it is pretty much bang for buck, the build looks sturdy.

Thanks for the Reply... also came across good reports on the Astello Radiance+ which is available @ Stereo...

Also considering PX100 headphones or its street wear style cousin the PMX100

Also has anyone have any idea where to find locally Koss UR 40 and PM whats the cost if possible... would like to have a firsthand look or test out the headphones to get a feel for em.. (surprised at the seemingly thin cord/cable on the UR40 in the pictures though)

Just read about PX100-II & PX200 II being launched has anyone seen them in stores yet (Price difference from precious gen is how much)?

From what I've read. It might be your stereo jack. Probably due to stress of pulling the cables or twisting left and right. Might be also due to very high volume usage or moist in the drivers.

Recommendations:
- AKG k24/26p
- Koss KSC75/ Portapro

- SoundMagic PL-30
- SoundMagic PL-50
- Astello Radiance
- Samsung Pleomax PEP-350 <-- only $18 at challenger. Good to trash around and replace when there is any problems.

Thinking of possibly getting a pair of headphones & earbuds now.. prolly might head down to SE in CWP to check out though still very tempted to get a pair of Soundmagic since the reviews have been very good. Then again, the Astello are also a very good option to the PL's as well.. *sigh* decisions decisions..

Kind of like the redesign of PX100-II (cord goes to one side only, Vol control, & reinforcement to joints) so wondering if they might have started showing up in stores here yet? the K26P looks good too..

As for my iGrado's probably have to go down to Music by Design where I bought em to see if they can be checked out/repaired, I'm also suspecting the stereo jack connection as being the culprit to the loss of sound in the left side. or maybe maybe can upgrade trade up to S60i? ;)

Which Challenger outlet would be best bet to check for those Samsungs? Funan?

ahdui kind of say it all. But will not go with Astello Radiance if you need isolation.

Samsung Pleomax PEP-350 should be the most value for money. No pain felt if it is to breakdown on you.

Personally, I like the AKG k26p a lot. both for the comfort and sound quality. Considering that those are headphones that are over your ears and not covering them yet giving a very good texture and bass. Thumbs up.

The koss KSC75... i think there is no more of a need to introduce it anymore but the earhooks are a pain in an ass. Gets rather uncomfortable after some time. Not forgetting that the newer batch of koss KSC75 also has in-line volume controls. :)

IMHO, 1 sided drop cables are more prone to getting damage as all the stress/pressure are focused onto the point while regular 2 sided drop cables can balance out the pull, therefore the cables should be more long lasting.

Anyway, why not take this opportunity and get into D.I.Y-ing? Like snapping off the jack and replacing a new one or maybe even re-cable them for some new life in it?

Probably going to check out the K26P & possibly PX100/200 to see which I prefer in terms of comfort & audio 'feel' in SE in CWP tomm if I have time. Wonder if I should check out the Koss Porta/Sporta pros as well.. :P

However I've become smitten with Skullcandy Titan and it seems to be highly recommended by Headroom's list of Best Cheap Head/Earphones.. sorry.. kinda a sucker for the Blingy Chromed version.. wonder how much they cost :$

Also, as previously mentioned.. as my iPod classic 5.5g left on a jet plane with my Ex... and well, I'm also going to be needing a new source player... Toying with the idea of buying an iPhone closer to Christmas, I'm wondering whats the current favorites which're giving Ipod Classic/Nano a fight these days? Would go for a iPod touch, but if I'm goin for an iPhone 3GS or something in the next 2 months, probably end up getting another iPod Classic or a 16gb nano to tide me over.

Is Focalprice the best place to order Soundmagic's as I'm pretty sure there aren't any local dealers from my forum trolling around here, Jaben forums & SGheadphones... Oh & BTW, hows Soundmagic's build quality measure up against Crossroads Mylar3's (circa late '07)? I can't really speak for the current Mylar offerings as I have been outta this scene for awhile now (since late '07/early '08)?

Whilst DIY is something I haven't really considered, I guess I could attempt it as I have used a solder quite a few times in my Poly Engineering days. What I'm concerned about is if there's anyway to check if the left speaker/driver of my iGrado's are actually still functioning before going through the effort of re-cabling the set.. (anyone have a starter guide on how to even get started on re-cabling or replacing the plug/jack)

thanks for the feedback so far... very helpful Ah Dui!! :D s

Soundmagic sound much better than Mylar3. Samsung Pleomax PEP-350 should sound similar to Mylar3. You can buy soundmagic off some forums like hwz or vr-zone. They are cheaper than shipping from focalprice. I will suggest getting a Sansa Clip or Clip+ to tide you over. It quite cheap and sound very good. The only problem is there is no Sansa distributor in Singapore so you may have to ship it from Amazon (There is a MO at vr-zone for the Clip+) or buy it 2nd hand. Jaben used to sell Sansa product. Not sure if there is any stock left.

The newest iPod Nano... despite the VGA camera, it is pretty decent and finally with radio? LOL
You can actually look for a soundmagic seller at vr-zone named "choongseng". I've bought a couple of earphones from him, great seller.

SoundMagic products, especially the PL-30 and PL-50 which I've both abused/used for a long time haven't failed on me at all. Using the PL-30 for more than a year regularly in the gym and sleeping with it. Still going strong. The PL-50 stays strong for the past few months too.

No idea about treoo. I never trust people who claim they are authorise/local distributor without trustworthy source to back them up. Deal with choongseng not too long ago and his service is good. Received the pl30 1 day after shipping.

So,

Popped by SE @ CWP earlier.. & walked out with PX100 & a pair of the Astello's...also auditioned PX200 & Portapro's.. & like the Koss ones too.. but prolly get those another day...

Was surprised at the price of Westone UM-1's & the Metro-fi's was very tempted to splurge on those but figured I'd nail down my source player first before going with those in the near future.

Was also tempted to just get a Nano but just managed to hold back.. the sales staff serving me seemed to claimed that the SQ from the Sony A series players is superior to the Nano & I wasn't too sure on that & figured I'd do some background reading on that first before deciding.

@Treo,

Yeah rather deal with people whom you guys can sorta vouch in a way for reliability & service.. so will try to get in touch with Choongseng as I'll prolly grab a set of PL 50's or 30's (or maybe both! have to read reviews)

Just wondering, is WTS UE Metal case, etc etcthis your post in SGheadphones?

Yup, the sound quality of the Sony A series players sounds much warmer and full bodied and not forgetting that EQ-ing doesn't have crappy distortions like iPods.

Hey thanks Ah Dui...

Hey ermm, since you've mentioned about D-I-Y re-cabling (& I'm not much of a DIY kinda guy)..

Could you lead me along the way to where to look at resources/guides on how to go about it? Are they in Available in S'pore? Saw some mention of HLS or something on one of the DIY forums for cables, etc..(I'm in JB btw) but seriously, very blur on the whole matter & where to start... Found out that HLS is in Sim Lim Tower Lvl 2.. :)

oh & those cryo cables that you seem to use for a couple of your DIY cables/IC are from Jena labs I'm guessing? you bought them online & shipped over or.. local source?

Pai seh, like I said.. very blur on the whole thing as I try to find out more about recabling my iGrado's... closest thing to a "guide' is iGrado recabling thread on Head Fi

Strange..Is the Sony A series Walkman quite new or something? Sony Singapore doesn't list it yet on its website..

The Sony Walkman A series has been in the market for quite some time already. You can actually head down to FARLE @ Funan to try them out.

It is pretty easy to D.I.Y. If you just want to change the stereo jack, just snap off and use a replacement jack. The wiring inside is pretty generic.

Red Colour = Right
Green/Blue Colour = Left
Copper Colour = Ground

Do remember to use a lighter to lightly burn the wires to melt the shielding.

If you want to recable the whole headphone, do head down to LHS to buy some cheap and good belden or Canare cables. The Starquad series are very bang for bucks and easy to play with, not forgetting that they are really cheap too.

Each driver(side) has a positive(+) and negative(-). the Positive will be the active channel and the negative will be the grounding.at the end, both sides' negative(-) will join together.

Sadly, my cables are not available in the market. They are self-made by me and sent for cryo treatment because I specially like 24awg cables and many suppliers do not have them.

Actual fact of 18awg and 22awg which most dealers have are too thick for portable usage and also not suitable for portable equipment as they tend to produce a rather congested sound signature if you listen carefully. A very artificial forwarding sound signature which is totally not natural. I would have been a great customer of ALO/Jena Cryo if they can provide me with 24awg cables. Jena Cryo used to produce them but that's like years ago.

Thanks for your guidance & info so far... looks like my project on re-wiring will have to wait for awhile.. next few weeks will be quite swamped with stuff coming up till early Nov. Sorry, but abit KPO here.. how'd u get your cables cryo-ed? Locally have such service? or have to ship the cables you'll be using overseas for the Cryo freeze.?

Stereo@CWP actually had some A-series sony's there, but I was in a rush so didn't look at em too much.. so wasn't sure if they were in 7000+ models or the 8000+ models.

anyways, after talkin to a friend of mine, looks like I'll be getting a new nano soon... he graciously offered to sponsor me one as an early Christmas pressie :D & even prolly going to give me a pair of UE's that he's not gonna be using anymore ( no idea what model).

Looking at it, might still want to get a 8Gb Sansa Clip+ either as a ultra portable/backup set or let my younger brother muck around with it from time to time.

Edited:
Ahhh, understand the reason for the MO now.. shipping for the 1st Kg is about USD23 thru DHL (with comgateway). Kena thrown off as the USD4+ i was charged was for the concierge fee & not shipping charges on the trial purchase I did thru Comgateway.com :$

Hey guys...

I've been looking at the PortaPro & the 25th Anniversary edition. Do you guys have any impressions on the 2 and is the 25th anniversary edition really worth a $40 premium? Sales person @ SE claims they're better.. but I fig it was just "salesman-ship". Quite liked the sound of the PortaPro's almost alittle more than the PX100's I bought.. but decided to get it next..

Thanks for any feedback.

Cheers!

IMO, it better sounding. Should be due to the different cable used. SE staff seldom do "salesman-ship" of selling. At least non in my experience so far. Aron, Cyrus and Ting always give me their honest opinion. However, all humans are different so it still better to trust your own ear than listening to others or reading online and take our words.

I see you are sinking into this steep hobby  :moneyfly:

Yes, well & truly Poisoned now... would've been in '07.. but GF :smack: :bash: say waste $$ :moneyfly:

Now, GF flew away and become Ex liao.. so got some license to indulge & try out abit la! :P

Well, not saying SE staff at Causeway Point was trying to sales talk me into buying something more expensive.. just that on my part I was wondering if what the sales guy mentioned about diff cable & better sound was accurate or not. As I was previously under the impression that the 25th Anniversary version was mostly an Aesthetic/Build Quality improvement.

After checking it out abit & your confirmation, looks like the guy was being accurate about the differences...

Yeah I totally agree.. best to try out for one's self to gauge if  or not.

too bad they dun have unit to audition for the 25th Edition at CWP to really see if how significant was the difference between the 2 models.

It look the same as the link below except for some minor changes on the cable leading from the Y splitter to the driver and some hole drills in attempt to make it semi open instead of full close.
