- Made with high quality component: Nichicon and WIMA capacitors - Main DAC chip is Burr-Brown PCM1793 with: -> 24bit/192kHz Sampling Advanced Segment Audio Stereo DAC -> Dynamic Range: 113 dB and THD+N: 0.001% -> 8x Oversampling Digital Filter - Digital input receiver chip DIR9001 with: -> This chip has better sound quality than the popular CS8412/4/6 commonly used in other DACs. It can play sound with much more detail and accuracy. - Digital Coaxial/Optical Toslink input, RCA analog output - Special design short signal path on a double side gold coated PCB with high quality soldering. - Dimension: 105mm*70mm*25mm Build Quality Nice casing which weighs rather light and I like the smooth borders. But I do not like the screws used. The PCB is nicely made and the components are placed in a nice grouping. Sound Quality Very open and dynamic sounding. Beats almost all DAC I've tried except for Piccolo DAC. However, it is pretty near piccolo's standard. It has a passive sound signature. The PRaT seems to slow down when you are listening to slow songs but the PRaT is nicely presented during nromal or fast paced music. The DAC's strongest point is the details. I could feel the micro details which I can't detect while using other DACs. Bass is very clean, doesn't spread out and it is just there. |

ahdui's Modification v1 - Swapped the op-amp inside from OPA2134 to AD8066 - Changed all the signal path op-amps from Muse to Pannasonic (100uF 16v) - tried to change the Power Path's Nichicon to Pannasonic (220uF 50v) but I failed. The Pannasonic capacitor is too tall, couldn't close the case. Sound Quality The first thing I realized is that the music suddenly became very engaging and opens up even more. There is also a drastic improvement in the airy-ness. The speed improved tremendously. Even with slow music, it doesn't slow down. It's a regret that I couldn't replace the Power Path's capacitor else I'm pretty sure the sound quality could be even better. |

This set belongs to flu_fighter. It is easily available in websites such as ebay. As for how it sounds as compared to y-1... I do not compare both of them because y-1 is just a 5v DAC while the PCM1793 is a 9-15v DAC. Obviously, the PCM1793 DAC wins hands down due to the fact that it has no limitations in both space and power. But 1 thing for sure, the y-1 is the sure winner for the 5v DAC region. |

You can get this from eBay. There are several sellers. It should cost around $110-$120 region including shipping. As for the power source you can use the Tekkeon/ Arigo AMP-60 Mobile poweor the 12v lithium battery for cctv cameras which can be easily sourced from eBay. That should set you back about $30 including shipping. The Tekkeon/ Arigo AMP-60 Mobile power costs more obviously as it ihas higher storage capacity and you can change the voltage supply. |

You might also want to consider the Hifidiy mini TDA1543 dac as well. This is slightly cheaper, runs on 9v-12v. The casing is the same, but it uses the highly regarded TDA1543 non-oversampling d/a converter. Usually I don't like NOS dacs for compressed music, they tend to sound a bit thin if not properly done. But this set is very well implemented, it has slightly different flavour compared to the Hifidiy mini PCM1793 dac. I tend to go back and forth between these 2 dacs, can't quite decide which one i prefer. The TDA1543 dac is a bit more clinical, but still has a full bodied sound, though not as full bodied as the PCM1793. The mids of the TDA1543 are a bit more airy and the vocals sound sweeter, especially female vocals. So if you are more into vocals, I'd suggest you take the TDA1543, if you are into rock and more impactful music, the PCM1793 is one of the most hard hitting sources I have heard. The PCM1793 is also the bassier of the 2 units. You can have a listen to my 2 sets before you make a choice. |
