As D.I.Yers, I'm pretty sure that everyone of us owns a soldering iron. Personally, I'm a pencil style user and after trying out different soldering irons, Hakko Presto 20W works really well for me. are there different sized tips for soldering irons? just wondering how big are your tips? I think I might go get a new soldering iron, mine belongs to my dad from a LONG time ago. and are those you guys use soldering stations? or just the iron thing? and where do you guys buy your soldering stuff? how much is the Hakko Pencil? |

Yup there is. I use the flatnose head for major purposes but I will switch to pencil tip for soldering of op-amps due to the small pin outs. During my poly days, I do use a soldering station which is very useful as I can control the temperature as I need. SLT have a wide range of soldering iron available. You need not get Hakko Presto. There are 2 types of style. The pencil style which is straight and the gun style which is shaped like a gun. ![]() Pencil Style ![]() Gun Style A good beginner Soldering iron will be the Antec 18W soldering iron. It doesn't burn/melt things down because the heating is not so fast. It is also perfect for op-amp soldering. You may want to upgrade to soldering irons with 40w or 60w to be more efficient but it is also more prone to burning your components. You got to be fast and precise. I would highly recommend "Goot" brand soldering irons. They have good grounding protection and a wide variety of different soldering irons. |

another tip: if you want it to "heat-up" hot on the tip.. hold your solder pen with its tip pointing up for awhile(30sec-1 min * YMMV) before soldering. This is method works well with those 18W. |

ooh what does a flatnose head soldering iron look like? and hmm, but say for pencil heads, are there different thicknesses too? cause I think mine is quite thick I don't like it. I might want to get a thinner one. |

would I be right to say the thinner the tip, the better? cause it's more precise? are there any downsides to using a super thin tip? and as far as you know, what's the diameter of the thinnest tip available? |

Here you will find all the tip size http://www.goot.co.jp/e/item.html?c=11 As for "the thinner the tip, the better" depends... I personnally can manage to use a normal tip to solder soic. You have to try inorder to know whats best for yourself. |

wow, nice work station. Would love to own 1 because I'm doing soldering in a very small air-con room. Need the fume extractor to keep my lungs healthy lol. |

Hakko have an fume extractor with carbon filter for about $90. There are some "brandless" fume extractor with carbon filter that are more powerful. I does electronic repair work hence the Pace MBT Station but it seen very little uses nowaday and I think I gonna build my own tube amp... Thats where it come in handle...

The bijou would be nice...are the Hammond transformer available here locally? Was thinking either getting the kit or to get the transformer seperately and build using point to point wiring. |

I have some military grade Teflon wire...I read that audiophile love teflon wire but I have idea how this type of cable could increase sound quality...I have a roll of them and can cut some metres for anyone who want to try them out. |

you can try approaching yuujin from this forum and ask him about the transformer. He is using the bijou right now. I do have a roll of teflon wires but they are electrical grade LOL. |
