I'm very interested in the D10 too and I would very much like to compare it against the y-1 DAC.

Now it a tough call for D10 or y-1. y-1 might sound better but d10 is more portable.

Heard the D10 today. The case is quite well built. I feel that it can take more impact that the SR71a. The size is just the length of h140.
I find that the amp sounds quite good. Considering that it not burn-in yet and the ability to roll opamp and maybe caps, there is huge potential of it outclassing amp that are more expensive. About the DAC, I not too sure as I had no experience with DAC. I tried h140 optical out to D10 to diablo, I just felt there a little more details than the h140 internal DAC. Need someone with experience with DAC to give more feedback. A comparison with Go-Vibe Vulcan series, D1 and y1 DAC will be welcome.

From what you've written over here. It sounds similar to my experience with both the MiniAudio DAC and iBasso D1.

The DACs mentioned above don't really perform up to my expectations probably because I've used even better DACs for quite some time. I will still look up to the D10 Cobra due to the size and op-amp rollable factor

The SuperDAC which you can find in ALO is pretty good. Definitely a very good DAC for people who like details and highs. The very distinctive house signature of Cirrus Tech DAC.

The most impressive DAC which really captures my heart is the Piccolo DAC. After some op-amp rolling done by flu_fighter. It sounds VERY VERY wide and the texture is superb.

However, the downside of both the DACs I've mentioned is that they do not have internal battery and you will need to bring batteries to power them up. Which adds up to a lot of weight and space usage. Not forgetting that both of them have only RCA outputs which adds up to another headache.

I tried the Go-Vibe Vulcan VB today and i personally i prefer Vulcan VB over D10. D10 dac is not opamp rollable with is negative compare to Vulcan VB. Vulcan VB is power by 4 AA batteries and same length and width as H140 in leather case. The dac is using Cirrus Tech dac.

I have not tried the Vulcan VB and I probably wouldn't be trying it until I have some spare time.
Personally, I don't really have much faith in Go-Vibe Crossroads products to start off with after since go-vibe 6.

I've tried the D10 and as stock, it sounds rather impressive already. As compared to a stock D1(From my memories). It has a wider soundstage and better texture. A Blackgates modded D1 still triumphs over the D10.

By simply changing the output op-amp to AD8066 totally brings the D10 to another higher level. It is definitely worth the buy If one do not own a D1 or MiniAudio DAC.

A few factors that attracts me in the D10 is the capacitors used. Not too many like the D1 but still there is still some options to roll the capacitors.
Op-amp rolling ability is as usual and the most importantly, the size. (so much smaller in size and matches with the iriver h1xx players well)

I will give D10 some burning in for the meantime, while waiting for my y-1 to arrive and then compare between the other DACs again.

Finally bought my D10 after much consideration. After messing around with all the default opamp, I still think the default configuration of 1 * ADA4841 for signal, 2 * AD708 for ground is the best for me. Time to start my opamp rolling journey.

it the default configuration that i receive. Or is it that i mix up that AD708 is signal and ADA4841 is the ground?

OK. ADA4841 is the signal and AD708 is the buffer.

I'm thinking of AD8066 for signal and AD8397 for the buffer.

It will be a great choice if you like the sound which you've heard from my iBasso P3. Even HiFlight changed his "Topkit" to my combination of AD8397 and AD8066 too. Surprisingly, He even suddenly changed his views of the iBasso Buffers too. (Initially he saiid it is a must to use in the buffer section but ended up using the bypass buffers as well.)

You might want to D.I.Y some bypass buffers if they are not supplied to you.

Posted Image

From your taste of music and likings of Dr Xin's Amplifiers. You might want to look at OPA2134 instead of the AD8066. It is also another great bass beast.

Do take note of the pin-outs of the AD8397 and AD708, make sure the buffer input pin and output pin are of the same numbers.

AD708

AD8397

In this case, both have the same pin-outs but I'm not sure if the AD8397 could run with it. Maybe someone who is more proficient in op-amps can guide us?

Pardon my limited knowledge.

I think it is possible to use 2 x AD8397 in the buffer position. D1 uses dual channel op amps in the buffer position, so I think D10 follows the same configuration as the D1.

You can try out this configuration, but I think it might sound a bit congested and all over the place as the AD8066 is a much faster op amp than the AD8397.

I've tried using the AD8066 in the dac output and AD8397 in the signal output with buffers bypassed of the D1, it sounds like that. It sounded much better with the AD8397 in the DAC section and AD8066 in the signal output section.

Would any of the D10 owners (theory_87, flu_fighter) be able to give a comparison on how the D10 with stock opamps compares to a D1 with AD743s, LMH6655s in the amp section and LT6241 in DAC, using USB? Would also be keen to meetup with any D10 owners to do a comparison if they are willing.

I don't own a D10. I have a D1 modded with blackgates. I'm waiting to hear a fully burned in D10 as well as the gamma-1 dac before I decide to get the D10.

I don't own an D1.

ahdui
There is 2 * ibasso buffers in the kit. There seems to be a resistors on it. Is that a bypass buffer?
I'm keen in AD8066 as I read about it sounding like Larocco sound signature. My only worry is the operating voltage as it work from 5-24v where D10 battery is only 4.2v. As for Xin sound signature, Dr Xin have been recommending me the use of AD8620 if I am getting the SuperMacroIV (look like AD8620 doesn't work).
I'm very new to opamp rolling. Will take D10 as a stepping stone before committing to expensive amp like SuperMacroIV.

flu_fighter
for D10, there is no opamp in the DAC. That is a reason i was considering Vulcan VB but eventually still won over by D10. I'm pondering on ordering y1 too as it quite cheap.

I read that there might be D10 DAC version being plan. But IMO, the amp section of D10 is quite worth it. May be rolling the red WIMA caps to BG if i'm free.

Yes, we all know that there is no op-amp input in the DAC section. It just feeds the signal directly to the amplification section.

Bypass buffers should be a plain soic-dip8 adapter with only 1 resistor on it.
Or you can see from the picture I've provided, the 2 adapters in the middle (buffer section)

What made you decide on the D10 instead of the Vulcan VB, I thought the Vulcan VB is so much better in your opinion?
The D1 with blackgates configuration itself is good enough to stop one's urge to purchase a D10 FYI.

No, the AD8066 does not give you Larocco's sound signature. The closest would be Phil-Modded AD743.
Personally I own a pair of Phil-Modded AD743 but it is too tall for my iBasso p3. (I couldn't keep it into the casing)

Why can't the AD8620 work out btw? Maybe I can help you solve your problem.

AD8620 don't work according to Hiflight.

I decided on D10 for some personal reasons.

What is Phil-Modded AD743

I've tried the AD8620, I see no problems with it.
Even the pin-outs have no problem too.

Anyway, Sorry for my mistakes. It's AD744 and not AD743. By simply snapping off leg no.6 and short leg no.5 to no.6 pin-out.

By doing so, you made use of the compensation pin-out as an output instead.

Thanks ahdui. Will try them out sometime later. I find the default opamp to be quite good. iBasso have created a value for money amp/dac with relatively good performance. After 6hour burning in, the sound starts to open up. Using default opamp, the mid and high is very smooth. only regret is the bass doesn't seems to hit low enough. I suspect it the ceramic caps that is limiting the bass performance.

Finally roll it today. As my blackgates is used for my old Xin Reference which the leg is shorten, I had a hard time trying to extend it since it does not fit into the red wima cap position.

47uF? why are you using such a big value for decoupling?
Capacitors used for decoupling should be as minimal as possible.
