Wondering if you guys have any recommendations for me as I'm looking for a point-and-shoot digital camera for bringing around when I'm outside. Some points: - slim - minimal noise - decent built-in flash Thanks in advance for any help from the kind souls. |

Slim is kinda subjective here. I found a G7 to be slim enough for me to bring everywhere compared to the DSLR, but my family(mainly sis and mum) says its too bulky :P... For a guy, I suppose you should be ok with medium compacts(not ultra compacts) therefore you should be looking for something with more oomph, which usually for slight larger compacts, means more zoom. Also, what kinda stuff do you usually shoot/shoot more of? I am personally a fan of panasonics wide angle, but when it comes down to macros, I personally feel that Canon is kinda unrivaled when comparing compact to compact. I'm also a fan of Canon UI, and think that the panny one is kinda cumbersome when you wanna tweak some settings. For flash, so far only the higher end canons that I have come across(G/S series) offers flash compensation, otherwise they should mostly work the same I think? Not so sure about the rest/newer models. As for noise, most of the current compacts should do pretty decently in sufficient light, only failing in low light conditions due to the smaller sensor. Do check out Dpreview.com for easy to use comparisons/reviews. Some models to look out for: Ricoh R7/R8 Panasonic TZ3/TZ4 Sony W150/W170 Canon Ixus(I don't really like this tho) Canon G7/G9(no wide angle but full manual!) As you can see, most of the above models offer wide-tele ranges, which IMO is very handy/important on a compact, and is also the reason why I didn't include any Nikon models even when I'm on a Nikon system :D. |

Alright then, you can throw out the Canon G/S series and maybe the Pannys(I still think they are quite small). The rest should be considered ultra compact to most people. Oh, and budget :P? |

In that case, I think you can take a look at the canon powershot A series or fujifilm FD50. Fujiflim FD series perform relatively well in poor light condition. |

Actually, why don't you make it down to Suntec today? Can get hands on with most of the camera models :P. Nothing beats handling them yourself, just to set aside a few so you can narrow them down with more research. Go early tho... |

look no further, the Fuji Z series are the beauties of the ultracompact class. clever & super neat design as the lens does not extend out of body when zooming. 19mm thin without any lens protrusion. very decent shots for its size. available in a myriad of colors to suit you. Z10 Z20 |

My recommendation is the Ricoh GX100. Reasons: 1. Widest FOV available at 24mm (can go down to 21mm with the excellent GW-1) 2. Stepped Zoom. 3. Takes RAW (DNG) format as well if you decide to give PP a try. And you dont have to spend a single cent to get a decent developer for it, GIMP w/ UFRAW (dcraw if you can be bothered) which supports the DNG format is free. 4. Have full manual mode. 5. Slim enough. 6. I am biased. Ricoh GX100 dpreview Small Sensor Cameras Forum PS. Yeah...if you want noise performance, the Fujifilm fd31 was quite raved about. |

Oh... I missed the ultra compact part... In any case, I ran a search on ultra compacts and some of the cameras being thrown up have a depth as much as 27mm. The GX100 is 25mm when powered down. If a non-extending lens is a must then I supposed it wont qualify. Lens cap is built-in. GX100 dimensions BTW, I dont own the GX100 (bought the GRD2 instead) but its 24mm wide angle is a strong feature in its favour. To me, the digital P&S is about how far you can go on the wide end. No other camera (not in current production anyway) can reach that wide. Noticed also that budget is "extensive", maybe can consider getting a Red Dot as well? Leica D-LUX 3 I just love its 16:9 format and its LCD screen. |

lol only their rangefinders are true Leicas. the point & shoots are like Beemers with toyota china engines. FF in M8? that's an M9! well done Leica if they can pull this off. coz the M8 is a failure, can't blame Leica as this is their 1st foray into digital. if Leica does not repeat the public relations debacle of the M8, i'll will be poorer also coz the M9 would be irresistable. |

(I need more information about it) Currently lying towards the Panny LX3 due to the size factor(Ultra compact) and also the praises it gets. |

LX3 is still in the market and it quite popular. I only seen the black model in real life. I believe LX3 is better due to the sensor size and pixel density. Only down side of LX is the lack of zoom. There is only 2.5x zoom on LX3 |

I think it will be quite hard to get a LX3 from the major "friendly" stores due to the popularity sometime back... LX3 has 2.5X zoom because it starts at 24mm, so its not really a downside...personally, I will take wide angle over range anytime ![]() Also, the G10 while very "utilitarian", is not as wide as the LX3, and is a good 3 stops slower than the LX3... And not to forget the faster lens...24mm AND F2.0 on a compact is really nifty... |

Yup, I totally know about the D-lux4 from Leica. The difference is about $400. I've compared a Leica D-Lux2 and a Panny LX-1(I suppose its this model) and I can easily spot the difference. the D-Lux2 is far superior in the richness and quality of the pictures taken. It is probably due to a different quality of lens and processor inside? **Correct me if I'm wrong. |
